TWO male inmates at St Thomas Prison in Marondera appeared in court yesterday facing sodomy charges after they were allegedly caught red-handed in a “compromising” position.

Report by Jairos Saunyama

However, both suspects Kais Koto (26) and James Phiri (21) denied the charge when they appeared before Marondera regional magistrate Alexio Shumba.

The court heard that the pair was intercepted by prison guards while having anal sex inside a toilet on March 12 this year.

The two initially allegedly pleaded guilty to the charge before prison officer Richard Makorese. They later changed their plea after being asked to submit written statements.

Prison officers then reported the matter at Marondera Rural Police Station on March 28.

Shumba postponed the matter to May 31 for judgment. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

POLICE EXPRESS CONCERN OVER MINING ACCIDENTS

CHEGUTU — Police in Mashonaland West have expressed concern over the upsurge in fatal accidents involving illegal gold miners operating at disused mineshafts over the past few weeks.

Report by Own Correspondent

The province has recorded several accidents at disused mineshafts as panners intensified their hunt for the precious metal since the beginning of this year.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said the latest incident occurred in Chegutu last Thursday involving a 23-year-old panner identified as Tawanda Kambarami.

According to police, Kambarami entered a disused mineshaft at Giant Mine in Gadzema, Chegutu, in the company of his two colleagues.

The earth reportedly curved in as he was about 12 metres underneath and he was buried alive.

His colleagues survived the accident and later retrieved Kambarami’s body from the rubble.

The matter was then reported to police in Chegutu, while the deceased’s body was taken to Chegutu District Hospital for post-mortem.
