The Supreme Court has ordered President Robert Mugabe to hold elections by July 31 2013.

Report by Tapiwa Zivira, Online Reporter

Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku made the ruling this afternoon after a Zimbabwean citizen, Jealousy Mawarire, made an application to compel Mugabe to set an election date before the life of the current parliament ends on June 29.

The ruling comes at a time when Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who heads one of the main political parties in the unity government, has been calling for a delay of polls to pave for political reforms.

Tsvangirai’s party argues that there are issues like media, security sector and electoral reforms that must be dealt with before elections can be held.

Finance Minister Tendai Biti has said country is also struggling to raise the needed $132 million for polls.

Mugabe’s Zanu PF has been calling for elections before on June 29.
