Artistes celebrate cultural diversity

LOCAL female musicians will on Saturday come together at the Book Café for the Sistaz Open Mic, an event which commemorates the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrated globally on May 21.

Report by Tinashe Sibanda

The show will start at 2pm and will feature both upcoming and established artists taking to the stage with music, poetry, dance and comedy.

“At Sistaz Open Mic there is always a rich tapestry of performances from various corners of the land. There will be performances in Ndebele, Shona and English as well as occasional phrasings borrowed from our South African, Mozambican and Zambian neighbours,” said Penny Yon of Pamberi Trust, which is organising the event.

“There would be a colourful rainbow of music styles crossing cultural barriers from mbira to jazz and modern urban soul to the deeply traditional.”

She said there would be special appearances by Edith weUtonga and Tariro neGitare with samples from their new albums.

There would also be a rare dance performance with a Caribbean flair by renowned dancer and choreographer Soukaina Edom-Mafundikwa and some famous Latin American jazz tunes by Yon and Ingrid Pinto.

Poetry will come from award-winning Batsirai Chigama and the highly-entertaining Kessia Magosha.

It is under Pamberi Trust’s gender programme called Female Literary, Arts and Music Enterprise.

It is held monthly to encourage female artistes to come out to participate in the arts and express themselves.

“Unabated over the last 6 years, the event never fails to entertain, with something for everyone — music, dance, poetry, comedy and a diverse audience ,” said Yon.

She said it was also a platform where first-timers get to experience the thrill of delivering a performance on a public stage with the bright lights and necessary music equipment as well as experienced mentors to encourage their artistic development and a supportive crowd to cheer them on.

“Many young women have used the platform with great effect, and this particular event will also celebrate their achievements.”
