A 27-member athletics team leaves the country for Botswana tomorrow for the combined Confederation of African Athletics Southern Region Senior and Youth Championship this weekend.

THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) has announced a 27-member athletics team which leaves the country for Botswana tomorrow for the combined Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Senior and Youth Championship this weekend. Report by Daniel Nhakaniso

The 27-member team which includes both junior and senior athletes, departs for Botswana tomorrow and returns home on June 3.

Initially, the championships were earmarked to cater for senior athletes only, but will now run concurrently with the Southern African Youth Championships.

The Youth championships were originally scheduled for May 23 and 24 in Pretoria, South Africa, but they have been moved to Botswana and will now be held concurrently with the seniors’ event on Saturday and Sunday.

Fourteen-member countries from Southern African countries will participate at the event and hundreds of athletes are expected to converge at the University of Botswana stadium for the games.

Confirming the final team, Njere Shumba, the Midlands Athletics Board chairman, who will also act as head coach for the team, expressed satisfaction with the crop of athletes selected and availed themselves for national duties.

“We have a very strong squad from both the youth and seniors categories and we will be hoping to do well in these championships. ”
