THE inaugural Zimbabwe International Carnival will officially launch tonight with a Carnival Bira.

The event will see various mbira groups, including Mbira Dzenharira, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe and Mawungira Enharira, performing at the Book Café in Harare.
Tomorrow, there will be a Carnival welcome cocktail for carnival stakeholders followed by a Carnival Ethiopian Night organised by the Embassy of Ethiopia on Thursday. On Friday, there will be a Carnival Jazz hosted by popular jazz musicians’ promoter, Josh Hozheri.
The Carnival procession will be held along Jason Moyo Avenue from fourth Street in Harare on Saturday afternoon. Over 100 groups from the country’s 10 provinces will take turns to showcase their various cultures on the streets.
Afterwards, a music festival, which will be the climax of the carnival, will be held on Saturday evening at Glamis Arena with artistes Sulumani Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah, Kapfupi, Peter Moyo, Sebastian Magacha and the Charambas billed to perform.
The carnival week will be a period of public revelry, partying and festivities for a common purpose, unity. The merrymaking and feasting durung this period usually brings people together.
Meanwhile, Jamaican musician Tarrus Riley who was billed to perform at the carnival will no longer be performing at the event.

If the carnival maintains the pace it took over at the weekend when the Carnival Queen Zimbabwe pageant and Carnival gospel show were held, then the event will be one worth attending as the two events were well organised and well attended by the public.
