IT needed a Zimbabwean double for Maritzburg United to subdue Chippa United in the South Africa Absa Premiership on Sunday as Terrence Mandaza and Cuthberth Malajila struck twice

IT needed a Zimbabwean double for Maritzburg United to subdue Chippa United in the South Africa Absa Premiership on Sunday as Terrence Mandaza and Cuthberth Malajila struck twice in two minutes for the 2-0 win.

Report by Wellington Toni

Mandaza had come in as a 45th minute substitute and that seemed to be the tonic that Maritzburg needed as their relentless assault yielded the opener in the 75th minute and Malajila sealed the three points 60 seconds later.

Chippa coach Wilfred Mugeyi knows he is headed for either the axe or Division One football next season.

Kingston Nkhatha opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Kaizer Chiefs beat Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 to open a seven point lead at the top of the standings after defending champions Orlando Pirates were held to a 0-0 draw by Washington Arubi’s Tuks.

Willard Katsande played the hardman for Chiefs for the entire game while fellow Zimbabwean Lincoln Zvasiya sat out the game. Mathew Rusike is out with an injury for Chiefs. For Celtic, again, there was no sight of Rodreck Mutuma.

Former Warriors veterans Esrom Nyandoro and Method Mwanjale were part of the Mamelodi Sundowns squad that drew 1-1 with Platinum Stars while Nyasha Mushekwi is struggling to break into the starting lineup.

Bidvest Wits beat Golden Arrows 2-1 with Thomas Sweswe and Tinashe Nengomasha in action. New signing Denver Mukamba did not make the final 18.

AmaZulu picked up a vital point as they drew 0-0 against Ajax Cape Town. AmaZulu featured skipper Tapuwa Kapini and defender Carlington Nyadombo while Khama Billiat played the entire match for Ajax with Tafadzwa Rusike coming in as a 74th minute substitute.

Moroka Swallows beat Free State Stars 1-0 with Oscar Machapa in action. Gilbert Mapemba is recovering from an injury that ruled him out of last Tuesday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier against Egypt.

In neighbouring Botswana, it was a bad Easter weekend for Madinda Ndlovu and his beMobile leaders and defending champions Mochudi Centre Chiefs who lost 2-1 to second placed Nico United on Good Friday before holding out for a 2-2 draw against third place Ecco City Greens on Sunday.

Despite the five dropped points, Madinda’s team still remained on top of the standings with 47 points; Nico are four points behind on 43 while Greens are a distant third with 39.

In the Kenya Premier League, Obadiah Tarumbwa’s Sofapaka rose to fifth place with 4-2 demolition of Karuturi Sports. The former Highlanders and Bantu Rovers striker scored the fourth goal of the match as Sofapaka completed a memorable come-from-behind win.

Knowledge Musona was in action for Augsburg in the German Bundesliga, albeit in a 2-0 home loss to Hannover 96 that left them in 16th place with 24 points from 27 matches and in the relegation play off place.

Musona played just seven minutes of the match despite impressing in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 loss to Egypt in a 2014 World Cup qualifier last Tuesday where he scored a spectacular goal.

His former team Hoffeinheim is a rung below with 20 points from 27 matches with seven games of the campaign to go.

In England, Bradley Pritchard played the whole match as Charlton Athletic beat Bolton Wanderers 3-2 and Onisimor Bhasera was also in action as League Two side Plymouth beat Exeter City 1-0.

In Denmark, things are upside down for Quincy Antipas as his side lost in the top flight log after they went down 1-0 to Esbjerg. The Warriors midfielder could not do anything for Brondby despite spending 90 minutes on the pitch.
