A 54-year-old Dete woman died last week after drinking an illicit traditional brew (Kachasu), police have confirmed.

Report by Blondie Ndebele

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said the deceased has been identified as Elinath Ndlovu from Mlambo village.

According to the police, on the fateful night, Ndlovu retired to bed early without any indications of health problems.

“In the early hours of the following day, her 15-year-old granddaughter was awakened by Ndlovu’s unusual snoring,” said Dube.

“The granddaughter was shocked to see her grandmother frothing at the mouth and she quickly informed Dumane Moyo, Ndlovu’s son.”

Dube said the two found a 500ml bottle of the illicit brew in Ndlovu’s blankets and she was smelling of alcohol.

She was taken to hospital, but died before they got there.

Police recovered the bottle of the drink which was half empty and suspicion is that she had taken too much of the brew.

“Police are still carrying out investigations. However, people should stop drinking illegal and harmful substances to avoid loss of lives,” Dube said.
