The world number one dropped the first set, but rallied after a verbal spat with her opponent to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The bad blood surfaced early in the second set when Williams held up her racquet to indicate she was not ready to receive a Jankovic serve.

The pair exchanged words before Jankovic protested during the changeover. However, it was Williams who came out of the incident on top.

She won 12 of the last 14 games to pick up her third title of the year and her third in this event.

“I wasn’t ready,” said Williams. “I am the most respectful player, other than Venus. I am so respectful to my colleagues.”

Jankovic, who won the tournament five years ago, drops to 4-6 in career head-to-heads with the American.
