Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara yesterday confirmed the incident which occurred at Hurungwe Prison Farm and identified the deceased as Shingirirai Prosper Matetakufa aged 25.

Police said prior to the incident, Matetakufa and his lover Mary Ushe (21) had a heated argument over an undisclosed matter while attending Independence Day celebrations at  Kent Farm.

The following day at around 13:30hours, Matetakufa, who was on duty, reportedly took an SKS rifle and shot himself once on the left side of the chest and fell from a guard room tower. He was spotted by another duty warden Cosam Dope (35) who found him bleeding profusely.

Dope inspected the weapon and observed that the rifle used in the shooting still had four live rounds before he called for help. Matetakufa was rushed to Karoi District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
