TWELVE political and non-political organisations came together to contribute money to bail out 23 people arrested on Monday last week while protesting against Zesa’s alleged move to employ job seekers from outside Bulawayo at its substation.

Report by Pamela Mhlanga

The protesters were bitter that the parastatal recruited 300 people from outside Bulawayo to work as contract workers at Insukamini substation, snubbing thousands of Bulawayo job seekers.

Mthwakazi Youth Leaders Joint Resolution spokesperson Mqondisi Moyo yesterday thanked various organisations for helping in the payment of the protesters’ bails.

He identified organisations which came to the protesters’ assistance as Welshman Ncube’s MDC, the Patriotic Union of Matabeleland, Friends of Zapu Trust, UMhlahlo Wesizwe sikaMthwakazi,  Matabeleland National Party, Mthwakazi Liberation Front, Ibhetshu likaZulu, Bulawayo Progressive Residents’ Association, Habakkuk Trust, Isijula Trust, Zupa and Zuwa.

“That is not the total number because there are some individuals from business communities and others who contributed in cash or kind, such as giving us moral support and food,” Moyo said.

“The bail money was paid by the willing hands of fellow Mthwakazi sisters and brothers faithful to the cause,” the statement read.  “It was a need realised, a need to bury all differences in pursuit of a common cause to take charge in our own space.”

MYLJR said people of Matabeleland would remain resolute and not be intimidated in the fight for their fundamental rights and declared that they would act until their demands were met.

The 23 protesters were granted $50 bail each when they appeared in court late on Tuesday, but were released on Wednesday. They will appear in court again on April 23.

In a statement, MDC spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube revealed that MDC had contributed $650 and paid out bail for 13 activists.
