MDC-T Manicaland provincial spokesperson and Makoni South MP Pishai Muchauraya was yesterday formally charged with contravening Section 186 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act after he allegedly made death threats against his rival, Geoff Nyarota.

Report by Everson Mushava

Muchauraya’s lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara told NewsDay his client was formally charged after he appeared at Harare Central Police Station’s Law and Order Section.

“He (Muchauraya) was invited by Law and Order police at the Harare Central Police Station today (yesterday) so that he may assist with police investigations,” Bhatasara said.

“He has been formally charged with two accounts of contravening Section 186 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly threatening Geoff Nyarota and his cousin Sophia Chibayambuya with death. We hope to appear in court tomorrow (today).”

Muchauraya has denied the charge. In his sworn affidavit to the police, Nyarota said that on February 28 he received death threats from a caller who was using a private number. Nyarota said he “recognised” the voice of Muchauraya.

“The caller, who did not identify himself, said: ‘You are a fool, you are a big fool.’ He then hung up the phone. He immediately called again and this time he said: ‘You are a big fool. You are sending your people to me. But you are going to die. I am going to kill you. I am a killer. Those who know me are aware that I am a killer.”

“Then he hung up the phone. I was shocked that a person could threaten to kill me like that. I have received warnings from people that I should be careful and be wary of Honourable Pishai Muchauraya,” said Nyarota.
