POLICE in Kwekwe yesterday said they had arrested one of the three Masendeke brothers who were reportedly on the run

POLICE in Kwekwe yesterday said they had arrested one of the three Masendeke brothers who were reportedly on the run, after they allegedly murdered a reveller at a Kwekwe night club on Good Friday.

Report by Blessed Mhlanga

Police sources said the suspect, Elson Masendeke, was arrested in Kadoma’s Rimuka suburb on Tuesday evening where he had allegedly gone into hiding.

“We have Edson (Masendeke) in custody at Kwekwe Central Prison holding cells and he is assisting the police with investigations.

The two other brothers (Edward and Ernest) are still on the run, but the net is closing on them. They can’t hide from us. We will find them,” a police detective who declined to be named, said.

The three brothers are relatives of the late notorious criminal and murderer Edmore Edmund Masendeke who was hanged in 2002 for murder.

“We understand that Ernest could have been injured after he was stabbed by the now deceased as he fought for his life,” the source said.

Kwekwe Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police spokesperson Detective Inspector Lawrence Machingura could neither confirm nor deny Masendeke’s arrest.

“I am not in the office at the moment and have no information about the investigations over the Mbizo murder,” Machingura said.

However, the NewsDay crew yesterday saw Masendeke being transferred from police cells to the CID offices in Kwekwe.

Mbizo 5 councillor Weston Masiya, where one of the Masendeke brothers was staying, told NewsDay that the siblings had caused a reign of terror in the area and among the Mbizo community at large.

“These guys were a menace. They would go about acting as if they are a law unto themselves, beating up and kidnapping people with the arm of the law looking very invisible. We hope that police will act swiftly and bring them to justice,” Masiya said.
