Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda yesterday confirmed the incident.

He identified the murder suspect as Bhekimpilo Ncube from Chief Sibasa’s area, Amazon B village in Filabusi. Sibanda said the incident happend at Ncube’s home on April 18 at around 7pm.

“The six-year-old Sinokubonga Sibanda, who resided at Siphephile Ncube’s homestead in the same village, was playing with Bhekimpilo Ncube’s two daughters Sikhangezile Ncube (4) and Sithandazile Ncube (2) at the accused’s home,” he said.

Sibanda said Ncube then stood up and drank some water before he suddenly lifted up Sinokubonga and smashed her on the ground twice and the girl screamed before dying on the spot.

A report was made to the police at Filabusi leading to Ncube’s arrest. The girl’s body was taken to Filabusi Hospital where it is still awaiting postmortem.

Sibanda said Ncube was a psychiatric patient who had been admitted at Ingutsheni Mental Hospital in Bulawayo, before being discharged last year in October and last took his medication in December 2012.

He urged people who take care of psychiatric patients to closely monitor and assist them, making sure that they always take their medication to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
