A MAJOR electrical fault at Sebakwe Water Works has affected water supplies in Kwekwe and Redcliff since Sunday, sending residents into panic mode as fears of disease outbreak mount.

REPORT BY BLESSED MHLANGA

Kwekwe mayor Shadreck Tobaiwa yesterday told NewsDay that Zesa employees were still repairing the affected power line.

“Since Sunday, Zesa has been trying to restore power supplies at the water treatment plant, but has been failing. Zesa has promised that before the day ends we will be back on line,” Tobaiwa said.

The affected plant supplies water to Kwekwe’s estimated 200 000 residents and another 100 000 residents from nearby Redcliff.

Tobaiwa denied reports that his council had run out of water treatment chemicals resulting in the water crisis.

“Water treatment chemicals are a priority to this council and, therefore, we have secured adequate resources to ensure that our residents will always have clean and safe water to drink,” Tobaiwa said.

Council is struggling to recover $23 million owed by ratepayers and residents who have not been paying their bills since 2009.

Of the outstanding bill, Ziscosteel owes $10 million.
