WINNER of the just-ended Zimbabwe Amateur Golf Championships Ben Follett-Smith leads the pack of golfers who will represent the country in the Zone V1 Amateur Competition against 13 other SADC countries in Windhoek, Namibia   from April 22-26. Report by Sokuluhle Mthethwa

The rising golf sensation emerged the winner on three -under par -285 at Bulawayo Golf Club (BGC) in the competition that teed off on Friday and ended on Sunday.

Follett Smith will be joined by Barry Painting, Clive Nguru, Christian Mbanga, Biggy Chibvuri, Bradley Hudson, John Sigaba and Travis Smith. Thembelani Vundla and Grant   Hudson are the non-travelling reserves.

Zimbabwe Golf Association president Aiden Mhere  said he was impressed with the level of play the amateurs put up.

“I was very impressed by the quality of play by the amateur golfers. The competition came at a good time when we have eight players who will represent the country in the Zone V1 competition against 13 other Sadc countries in Windhoek, Namibia with 10 having confirmed participation.

“We have put up a very strong team. We always coming second to South Africa, but we want to slay the giants this time,” he said.

Follet-Smith could only say that he had a good tournament after he receiving his prize trophy, a golf bag, an iron bar and a voucher for winning the competition. Zimbabwe Open Committee chairman Livingstone Gwata was the guest of honour at the event.

Hanesh Nagrani   was second on one-over-par 289 while Clive Nguru was third on four over par 292.

Jack Allard was fourth after carding 13 -over par-301. Barry Painting, Jeff Chitando, John Sigaba, Steven Simukai, Biggie Chibvuri and Christian Mbanga finished in a  six way tie on 14-over-par 302.

The prestigious Zimbabwe amateur competition attracted 75 golfers from around the country and also saw the top golfers winning various prizes.
