EMAKHANDENI Cricket club will be hoping for a redemptive performance when they host Harare side Takashinga 2 in a National Cricket League match today at the Bulawayo Athletics Club (BAC).

Report by Vitalis Moyo

The Bulawayo outfit opened their campaign in style with a 90-run victory over Westside Cricket Club in Mutare, but suffered a setback after a shocking-two wicket loss in last week’s fixture against Rainbow at BAC.

In last week’s game, it was the visitors who won the toss and put Emakhandeni to bat first dismissing them for 154 runs.

Another superb batting performance by young Brian Chari, who also plays for Matabeleland Tuskers in franchise cricket, saw him get a half century for Emakhandeni while another Tuskers player Gavin Ewing added 30 runs to the side’s tally.

In response, Rainbow chased down the target and managed to reach it with two wickets to spare handing the hosts their first defeat in the group.

A five-wicket haul by Emakhandeni skipper John Nyumbu and Njabulo Ncube’s two dismissals could not stop the visitors from winning the tightly contested match. Nyumbu told NewsDay Sport that they are going for nothing short of victory in today’s clash.

“We are hoping to get our campaign back on track by winning our match against Takashinga. It is going to be a tight game as they are the strongest side in the group,” Nyumbu said.

The Pollock Mubhobho-coached Emakhandeni side will be hoping that Chari continues with his good form on the bat while Thabo Mboyi, Stephen Chimhamhiwa, right-arm fast-medium bowler Ncube as well as the captain, will be instrumental in the bowling.

Takashinga will be looking at the likes of Elton Masakadza and Foster Mtizwa to upset the hosts.

Emakhandeni are in group A alongside Harare-based sides Rainbow and Tashinga 2 as well as Mutare’s Westside Cricket Club.

Another Bulawayo side BAC is struggling as they are yet to pick up a win so far.
