HARARE magistrate Tsatsawani Ndaba on Tuesday ordered two cousins convicted of incest to perform 140 hours of community service

HARARE magistrate Tsatsawani Ndaba on Tuesday ordered two cousins convicted of incest to perform 140 hours of community service.

Report by Phillip Chidavaenzi

Initially, the cousins Patrick Zingwena (24) and Josephine Muonde were sentenced to eight months in prison each before four months were suspended on condition of good behaviour and the remainder lifted on condition they completed their community service duties at Mabvuku polyclinic.

The court heard that sometime last year, on dates unknown to the State, the pair engaged in an incestuous relationship until they were caught red-handed by their uncle identified only as Jefias.

Jefias counselled the two delinquents and impressed upon them to stop the practice immediately since it was taboo. After that, Zingwena left the neighbourhood and went to reside with his cousin Jackson Singini in Mabvuku, Harare.

During trial, the court heard that on several occasions, Muonde would visit Zingwena at his new base in Mabvuku on the pretext that she was going for holiday lessons.

After Jefias got wind of the development, he made investigations and established that the two had not stopped their incestuous relationship. He tracked Muonde on April 15 while in communication with Singini through his mobile phone.

When Jefias and Singini knocked on the door to the room where Muonde had entered, Zingwena opened the door half naked.

Jefias entered the room and found Muonde lying on the bed naked. When he questioned them, the two admitted having been had in sexual intercourse on regular occasions. The matter was then reported to the police, leading to Zingwena and Muonde’s arrest.
