MASVINGO — Fired three Gutu MDC-T councillors, including council chairperson Daniel Jinga, have been dealt another blow after Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo suspended them.

Report by Tatenda Chitagu

Jinga and finance committee chairperson Fabian Mamombe, who is also councillor for Ward One, are among four councillors who were recently fired by the MDC-T for allegedly awarding a tender without council approval.

Two others — Raymond Chinhenga of Ward 10 and Emmanuel Toperesu of Ward Eight — were also axed by the party for allegedly squandering villagers’ money, which they collected promising to buy them maize meal.

As if being expelled from the party was not enough humiliation, Jinga and Mamombe have been suspended by Chombo over another alleged tender scam of $400 000. Gutu District Administrator Roy Hove announced the pair’s suspension at the local authority’s full council meeting this week.

The two are alleged to have un-procedurally awarded a water and sewer reticulation tender to a Harare-based company Bruvoc Investments, as well as making an advance payment of more than 40%.

They are also alleged to have altered council minutes so that it appeared as if a full council meeting had deliberated on the matter when in fact nothing of that sort had happened.

Jinga and Mamombe could not be reached for comment yesterday.
