POLICE Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri yesterday ordered his charges to arrest perpetrators of political violence without fear or favour

POLICE Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri yesterday ordered his charges to arrest perpetrators of political violence without fear or favour and to deal with the cases expeditiously.

Report by Feluna Nleya

He said the police would not only clamp down on the physical perpetrators alone, but would also track down and arrest those behind the violence.

“Police investigations will be brisk and energetic with a view to identifying not only the perpetrators, but those behind them,” said Chihuri.

Chihuri was addressing police at the occasion of the conferment of 72 officers with new senior ranks at Morris Depot in the capital.

“The forthcoming national plebiscite requires that you exercise your duties with assertiveness, conviction and boldness without fear or favour,” Chihuri said.

“The misguided malcontents who believe in fanning violence have to be dealt with decisively within the fullest extent and wrath of the law. The nation cannot be held to ransom by the overzealous criminal few who want to take the generality of the peace=loving people for spoil in furtherance of their selfish agenda whether sponsored or rented.”

President Robert Mugabe recently promoted 72 senior officers, eight of them to the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner.

The eight include chief police spokesperson Charity Charamba, Robert Masukusa, Bernard Dumbura, Angeline Guvamombe, Rabson Mpofu, Abigail Moyo, Goodwill Musariri and Elliot Ngirandi.

Chihuri said the police would not tolerate acts of political violence.
