GWERU businessman Webster Chiteta (35), remanded in custody last week on allegations of murdering his wife, had his bail application turned down

GWERU businessman Webster Chiteta (35), remanded in custody last week on allegations of murdering his wife, had his bail application turned down by a magistrate yesterday.

Report Stephen Chadenga

Chiteta’s lawyer, Reginald Chidawanyika, had made the bail application, but Gweru magistrate Sithembiso Ncube dismissed it saying police investigations were still underway.

Chiteta, popularly known as Dzatu, who owns Camvalve Recovery Company, allegedly strangled his wife to death a fortnight ago under unclear circumstances.

Allegations against Chiteta of No 46 Mtapa Flats are that on April 3 he retired to bed at around 0130 hours.

When the now-deceased, Winnie Tracy Phiri, joined him in bed at about 0330 hours, Chiteta allegedly strangled her to death before making a false report of sudden death at Mtapa Police Station.

But a postmortem report by a doctor revealed that the death was a result of dislocation of the cervical spine and excessive movement of the neck.
