Mathew Marigawu (34) pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, unlawful entry and malicious damage to property when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.

The magistrate remanded him in custody to April 24 for trial. Prosecutor Bruce Maphosa told the court that on March 30 this year, Marigawu was drinking beer with the complainant, Ruth Madara (38), at one Blessed Chirwa’s home in Chibuyu, when an argument broke out over some Zambians who had been arrested in the area.

It was not clear in court papers why or when the Zambians had been arrested.

Marigawu allegedly kicked Madara on her private parts. After that he allegedly broke into her hut where he found a 20kg pocket of mealie meal. He allegedly poured water into the mealie-meal and destroyed eggs. Madara reported the matter to the police leading to Marigawu’s arrest.

Madara was taken to hospital where a medical practitioner indicated in a report that she had been seriously assaulted.
