BEITBRIDGE councillor Fanuel Mandebvu has disclosed that the border town’s perennial water woes are now set to ease after council recently received a $3 million World Bank cash boost for construction of a new water plant.

Mandebvu said upon completion, the new plant will have the capacity to provide water to nearly two million people. Beitbridge has an estimated population of
45 000 residents and is the largest transit point for thousands of travellers moving to and from South Africa.
The water would be drawn from the nearby Limpopo River.
“As council, we expect to complete the project in August as 40% of residents are now receiving water daily,” Mandebvu said.
The latest development comes amid fears of a fresh cholera outbreak in the border town.
Meanwhile, the town council is finalising work on the Dulibadzimu Stadium after one of the teams in the town, Tripple B, was promoted to play in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League this year.
