THREE people died and three others were injured yesterday morning when an Isuzu KB double cab vehicle veered off the road, uprooted power cables before plunging into a four-roomed house in Bulawayo’s Nketa 7 suburb.

REPORT BY BLONDIE NDEBELE

Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the accident.

“We confirm that three people died in an accident that occurred around 2am at Nketa suburb,” Moyo said without giving more details.

But witnesses at the scene of the accident said those killed were on the truck, including the driver.

They suspected the vehicle was heading to Nketa from the city when the accident occurred.

Sithabile Ncube, a family member, said the car ploughed into the house and injured Higgins Ncube (24), Godwin Ncube (28) and Anold Dube (17) who were sleeping. “Higgins was trapped by the bricks when the rescue services came,” Sithabile said.

“He sustained injuries on his mouth and leg. Godwin was injured in the head and leg and Arnold has minor injuries.”

The accident destroyed a bedroom and toilet, while other rooms were left with cracks. Furniture in the house was also destroyed.

A neighbour Julius Toyiwa said they were awakened by a loud bang.

“We immediately rushed outside to find out what was happening and to our amazement, we saw a vehicle inside a destroyed house,” she said.

“When the fire brigade came ,they could not find the other child who was sleeping in the same room and they rescued others and retrieved the dead bodies.”

She said they suspected the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle.

The car veered off the road before plunging into the house about 50 metres away from the curve.

Residents called on the Bulawayo City Council to construct speed humps in the area, saying they had witnessed three similar accidents in the past.

“We want humps here. This is the third accident since last month as drivers fail to negotiate the curve,” said a resident.

“We are losing lives here and the council should do something.”
