THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says it will use Workers’ Day celebrations next month to demand answers from Cabinet ministers

THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says it will use Workers’ Day celebrations next month to demand answers from Cabinet ministers on the state of Bulawayo’s economy.

Report by Staff Reporter

Percy Mcijo, the ZCTU’s western region officer, told NewsDay yesterday that the government was yet to respond to a petition sent by 200 workers from the city last year through the labour body demanding an end to job losses. The petition was addressed to the ministries of Finance, Industry and Commerce, Labour and Social Services as well as that of Water Resources Management and Development.

Mcijo said ZCTU now wanted the ministers to address the grievances during the May 1 celebrations.

“We are engaging the ministers so that they come and tell workers and Bulawayo residents if there is still hope for them on issues of adequate water supplies, employment and revival of the industry,” he said.

“We want the Labour and Social Services minister Paurina Gwanyanya Mpariwa to tell the people what they should do as many people lost their jobs when the industries closed while most of those at work don’t get paid.

“Finance minister Tendai Biti must come to explain if Dimaf is a reality or it is just a political gimmick.”
