The 2013 South African Triathlon Championships will take place at the Orient Beach in East London on March 17.

Zimbabwe will use the highly competitive championships to select a team which will represent the country in the African Championships to be held in Morocco May Felgate, a two-time Olympian, has been a regular feature in national representative sides before he called time up on his career towards the end of the last year.

Unlike in the past when the former elite triathlete would be the country’s brightest prospect, this time around that responsibility will fall to rising local triathlete Laurelle Brown, expected to lead the squad of 32 local triathletes in South Africa.

Brown, the multiple South African Championships and continental gold medalist, will captain the side which head coach Wayne Davidson believes would do well in South Africa.

“I believe this is the most competitive team we have ever assembled, with as many as ten girls and six boys as potential medallists. The squad has come together well, and preparations are now almost complete.

“We will end off this weekend with some specific technical skills training, but the conditioning work is done and I’m sure we are well prepared and with a keener edge than last year when we returned with six medals, but no boys’ medals,” Davidson added.

Zimbabwe will field athletes in the boys and girls’ Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 age groups. The Under-13 and Under-15s will compete in a race consisting of a 375m swim, 10km cycling and 2,5km run while the Under-17 and Under-19s will participate in a 750m swim, 20km cycling and 5km run.

Zimbabwe Squad Girls: Jamie-Lee Soper, Charlotte Brice, Gabrielle Chassart, Tyla Storrer, Rachel Jeans, Chloe Paye, Cameryn Davidson, Rebecca Duncan, Skye Davidson, Karishma Patel, Serena Rendell, Helen Mitchell, Jodie Smith, Laurelle Brown Boys: Brett Elliot, Andoni Matzuris, Michael Benade, Kieran Ellis, Gideon Benade, Mitchell Kaye, Rupert Anschuetz, Joshua Koutoungos, Devin Jennings, Alex Colegrave, Reece Williams, Thomas Haddon, Drew Williams, Clemens Anschuetz, Luke Collins, Chad Scallan, Arist Koutoungos, Blake Rautenbach
