This year’s edition of the South African Triathlon Championships will take place at the Orient Beach in East London on March 17 and Zimbabwean triathletes will be hoping to do well ahead of the continental championships in Morocco in May.

Triathlon Zimbabwe president Rick Fulton told NewsDay Sport in an interview yesterday that the squad was selected at the conclusion of the National Triathlon Championships which were held in the capital on Sunday.

“We had a very good turnout from local triathletes at the National Triathlon Championships at Mount Pleasant on Sunday. We were using the event to select our junior teams for the South African Championships in South Africa next week.”

Fulton said he was confident the squad would do well.

“I’m pretty confident that we will do well in South Africa especially in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 categories where our youngsters have traditionally done very well in the past. It’s important that our juniors continue to get the necessary exposure so that they can develop as they grow older and be able to graduate to the elite category. As you know, Chris Felgate retired after the Olympics and we need more youngsters to come up the ranks.”
