CAPE TOWN — New Chippa United signing Benjani Mwaruwari will not play for the club against Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend, but could make his debut next Wednesday against league leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

The former English Premier League striker was signed by the bottom-placed Premier Soccer League club on Tuesday, after initially arriving in Cape Town for trials at Ajax Cape Town.

Mwaruwari, who was the PSL’s best player in 2001 when he played at Jomo Cosmos, must still get his paperwork sorted before he can be fielded, the Cape club said.

He is also reportedly short of match fitness and the Absa Premiership match at the Botshabelo Stadium today is seen as too early for him.

But Chippa coach Wilfred Mugeyi hinted he might field the 34-year-old former Zimbabwe international at home against Chiefs in midweek.

“I’m excited to have a striker like Benjani in the team,” he told reporters on the eve of his side’s departure for Bloemfontein.

Mwaruwari had been on a week-long trial with Ajax and played for them in a training match against Milano United on Monday but Mugeyi, a former national teammate of Benjani’s in the Zimbabwe set-up, stole in to offer the player a contract until the end of the season.

Mwaruwari left Cosmos for a successful spell in Europe with Grasshoppers Zurich in Switzerland; French side AJ Auxerre, and English clubs Portsmouth, Manchester City, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers.
