POLICE yesterday retrieved the decomposing body of a nine-year-old boy from a well at a residential stand in Zengeza 4, Chitungwiza.

Report by Feluna Nleya

The boy went missing in January this year and efforts by his parents and the police to find him had been fruitless until Monday afternoon when builders at a nearby stand stumbled upon the body as they sought to fetch water from the well.

Acting Harare provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube confirmed the incident and said the parents of the child had positively identified him.

The police said they were still investigating circumstances surrounding the death of the boy although initial indications were that no foul play was suspected.

“We received the report that a body had been found in a well and when we attended to the scene it was discovered that it was the body of the nine-year-old Nyasha Nyamtaka who has been missing since January,” Dube said.

It is said Nyamtaka, who stayed with his mother in Zengeza 2, went to visit his father in Zengeza 4 during the festive season when he went missing.

Police said Nyamtaka left home on January 14 and told his brother he was going to play outside, but never returned.

Dube said: “We urge members of the public to protect dug wells to avoid such incidents.”

“If a well is no longer in use we suggest that you cover it so that children do not fall inside.”

Witnesses said they discovered the body when builders wanted to get water from the well.

“There were builders who were working around that area and when they wanted to draw water from the well, that is when they saw a body floating and notified the police,” a source said.
