GWERU — A 19-year-old man from Lower Gweru has been slapped with an effective 10-year jail term for raping his 10-year-old niece on two occasions.

Report by Stephen Chadenga

Gweru magistrate Morgan Nemadire sentenced Clive Mazhekete to 12 years in jail, but suspended two years for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on February 15, Mazhekete of Kusile village under Chief Sogwala, was sleeping on the bed while his niece and her younger brother were sleeping on the floor in the same room.

At around 9pm, Mazhekete called the complainant to join him on the bed where he removed her pants and raped her once.

He repeated the offense five days later.

The matter came to light after the complainant’s grandmother discovered that she was experiencing difficulties in walking.

A report was made at Gweru Rural Police Station, leading to Mazhekete’s arrest.
