This follows her outstanding performance at the National Association of Secondary School Heads Harare Province inter-district competitions last week.

The former Warikandwa Secondary School student, now a Form 3 student at Dzivaresekwa High School, romped home first in her favourite 400m event in a time of 1 minute 1 second at the National Sports Stadium.

She also won the 300m hurdles event coming home in a time of 50sec.

The Dzivaresekwa High school student joins other athletes — Eaglesvale’s Robin Chitsato who won the 100m event in the men’s category in 10,85sec and Munyaradzi Rutsate of St Georges who came second in 10,89sec.

Tarisai Mapfumo from St Georges is also set to represent Zimbabwe at the youth championships in the 800m event after she also did well. The African Youth Championships are set for March 28-31.

Zimunhu was plucked from a remote school in Chivhu after she scooped four medals, including two golds at the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa Athletics Youth Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, last year.

Her coach Silas Muringani, who is also the secretary-general of the Harare Athletic board, said the African Youth Championships in Nigeria will help to expose the athletes to tough competitions.

“We hope the athletes will do well at the African Youth Championships.

“It’s also a platform for the athletes to gain international exposure as they will also qualify for the World Youth Championships in Ukraine in July,” Muringani said.
