India wrap up Test in four days

HYDERABAD — India’s spinners ran through Australia’s defence, dismissing them for 131 to secure victory by an innings and 135 runs before lunch on the fourth morning of the second Test in Hyderabad yesterday.

Australia resumed the day on 74 for two with Ed Cowan and Shane Watson looking to take a considerable chunk out of the 192-run deficit by lunch.

But India had other plans and only three overs into the day Ishant Sharma snared Watson (nine) down the leg side. Mahendra Singh Dhoni completed a smart catch to his left and the Aussie was dismissed without having added to his overnight score.

Australia needed Michael Clarke to rescue them as he had done so many times before, but it was not to be as he received a peach of a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja that flattened his off-stump for the second time in this match after pitching on middle — the captain departing for 16.

From there, it was a procession of batsmen traipsing off the field, with India mopping up the last seven Aussie wickets for 23 runs as their ineptitude against spin was exposed.

Matthew Wade (10) was the only other batsman who managed to reach double figures, with Moises Henriques getting run out for a duck, Glen Maxwell reached eight, Peter Siddle departed for four and James Pattinson (0) was the final wicket.

Ashwin bagged his eighth five-wicket haul in only his 14th Test, with a return of 28-12-63-5 and Jadeja finished with 3-33.
