Douglas Chimbetu brought the house down when he gave a top- notch performance at the Hilltop Tavern in Warren Park, Harare, at the weekend where he took revellers down memory lane with some of his late uncle’s enduring songs.

The 21-year-old son to Allan Chimbetu effortlessly reproduced his uncle’s voice, dance routines and other stage moves that drove revellers into a frenzy as they sang and danced along.

He, like other Chimbetu offsprings, sports the popular box haircut which was a trademark for the senior Chimbetus namely Simon, Naison and Allan.

After each song he did not leave out Sulumani’s popular “thank you so much” catch phrase which seemed to stir so much excitement.

“I took up my father Allan’s band, the Dendera Kings, because I felt that music was an inborn thing to me and an opportunity to showcase my talent as I believe one has to prove themselves strong enough in the music industry,” he said.

He said his cousins Sulumani and Tryson supported him and soon his fans could expect a collaboration involving the three.

Throughout the energetic performance, the young man belted some of the revellers’ favourite tracks by Chopper including Dzandipedza Mafuta, Vhisikosi, Boterekwa, Mukoma Sam, Maroro and Newspaper.

He also sang one of his father’s songs, Sonny and throughout the show, he performed a variety of songs including his own compositions like Vahosi and Chipisoni.

“We are always happy to work with this young man because he is passion-driven, he is a risk- taker as well because he will even perform and wait to be paid according to the show’s attendance,” Hilltop Tavern, manager, Michael Munyanyi said.

Munyanyi added that people loved it when Douglas performed because of all his family members he was the next best thing to the likeness of the late legend, Simon.
