BULAWAYO City Council is planning to set up car wash sites in order to regulate the service and cash-in on the business.

The city’s director of engineering services Simile Dube told NewsDay last week the local authority wanted to capitalise on the high vehicle traffic use to generate revenue.

“The City of Bulawayo has seen a rise in vehicle numbers and this has brought about a boost in related businesses such as car washes, motor service stations and related businesses all over Bulawayo,” he said.

“The town planning branch was proposing the creation of car wash sites around Bulawayo as a measure to meet public demand and exercise control of these services.”

Dube said a prototype car wash design had been drafted and “would be sold to interested entrepreneurs at a value determined by the City Valuer.”

Some of the conditions for operating a car wash business include proximity to a service station or terminus with ablution facilities and use of waste water to be drained in to the municipal system. Council said car washers will not be allowed to use municipal water, but use a tank or any other gadget approved by the local authority.

Dube said council was inundated with applications to operate car wash businesses from people who were leasing car park sites in various locations within “the built up high density residential areas or were venturing into the car wash business for the first time or had been operating illegally and were seeking to regularise their businesses”.

“This branch felt that such requisites could be acceded to provided all city council by-laws were met and revenue was obtained accordingly,” he said.
