This year’s Castle Tankard will be run on May 4 at Borrowdale Racecourse with a stake of $50 000 and consumer prizes worth $250 000 courtesy of the sponsors Delta Beverages, through their Castle Lager brand.

The Castle Tankard, which was introduced in 1960, will this year run under the theme ‘Destination Perfection”.

The premier race will be run over 2 000 metres on a race card with seven other races all sponsored by Delta brands namely Castle Milk Stout, Castle light, Golden Pilsner, Zambezi, Zambezi Light, Bohlinger’s and Carling Black Label.

Speaking during yesterday’s unveiling ceremony, Patricia Murambinda, Delta beverages marketing manager said: “Our theme for the running of the Castle Tankard this year is destination perfection. This theme reaffirms the Castle Tankard as the country’s most prestigious horse racing event and establishes that with the Castle Tankard horse racing event, only perfect moments take place i.e. the perfect race, the perfect finish, the entertainment, the perfect beer, perfect prizes, the perfect lifestyle etc. The setting is set for a good outing for everyone.”

Murambinda praised the relationship between Delta Beverages and Mashonaland Turf Club.

“Delta Beverages and Mashonaland Turf Club are only increasing excitement to an already strong relationship. This is also part of Delta’s big picture as a socially responsible organisation that will always give back to its consumers and stakeholders.

“We do hope and believe this sponsorship shall be able to pay tribute to the horse racing fraternity who have worked very hard over many years to attain the standards required to represent their nation.”

Brian Black, the chairman of the Mashonaland Turf Club Board of Stewards said:  “Throughout its history, the Castle Tankard goes with something for the customers who stood by the two organisations at all times. We therefore participate in this unveiling of the Castle Tankard with the appreciation of the huge investment going towards the event this year. With 250, 000 worth of consumer prizes, the promotional campaign has been magnified reflecting the ever growing evolving nature of the Castle Tankard. The value of this brand to the existence of Delta as a business is never in doubt. Through the 2013 theme, destination perfection, we are challenged and motivated as partners to never slumber in our support and commitment to the success of both the consumer promotions and the actual race day come May 4. With a $50, 000 race stake we are anticipating a perfect field of horses on the day.”

A South African challenger Code Rock trained by Alyson Wright won the 50th running of the Castle Tankard.
