After they were embarrassingly handed a 4-1 defeat by visiting Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa last month, Brenna Msiska’s charges looked promising ahead of the new season.

New signing, left back Ronald Pfumbidzai and Caps winger Takudzwa Mahori promoted from the team’s juniors exhibited huge potential and were a constant threat to the army side every time they had possession.

After a dull first half in which both teams struggled to get into the groove, Pfumbidzai opened the account for Caps United taping in a cut-in from the left by Playmaker Hardlife Zvirekwi.

After the goal, Rhinos looked determined to equalise with Bruce Hamora coming close with a speculative shot which went over the bar.

The army side, which fielded old horses Lazarus Muhoni and skipper Brighton Chandisaita appeared deflated as the match progressed allowing Caps United to boss them around especially in midfield where Zvirekwi was outstanding.

Zvirekwi also created the second goal, picking up a loose ball before setting up Leonard Fiyado who beat his marker before slotting past badly-exposed veteran goalkeeper Britto Gwere.

United coach Msiska was happy with the victory but said there were still areas to be improved. “For a start it’s a good victory. It’s a relief perhaps also to the supporters. I am sure they now understand the direction we are taking. It’s not the final squad. There is still room for other players. We are still rebuilding.

“We still need to strengthen our central defence and the strike force but I think this is a squad capable of winning the championship,” said Msiska.

Rhinos coach Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera said: “The result is disappointing, but overall I am happy with the performance. We played well, but we are not used to playing on the artificial turf and that affected us in a way. There is still room for improvement.”
