CAPE TOWN — The City of Cape Town has submitted a last-minute motion to amend the section of a new liquor law that would ban alcohol sales on Sundays, the Cape Times reported on Thursday.

The Liquor Trading Days and Hours By-law, to come into effect on Monday, had angered some consumers and those in the industry. According to the by-law off-licensed premises may sell liquor for consumption from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm.
Only wineries could trade from their tasting rooms on Sunday.
Mayoral committee member Garreth Bloor submitted an urgent motion on Wednesday to reconsider these trading hours.
“We are aware that the by-law is designed to address the problems of alcohol abuse in communities, but there are employees and industries affected that we have to take into consideration,” Bloor was quoted as saying.
He said they would only be looking at lifting the ban of sales in commercial nodes, not residential areas.
According to the report, opposition parties criticised the motion, saying businesses close to the Democratic Alliance were putting pressure on the party to amend the by-law.
