BULAWAYO men’s provincial basketball side is eyeing a gold medal in this year’s edition of the inter-provincial competition in Gweru at the weekend.

The two-day tournament will see six provinces — Harare, Bulawayo, Mashonaland East, Midlands, Mashonaland Central and Manicaland participate at the Zimbabwe Military Academy. Bulawayo province has had a five-year piece of silverware drought. Daniel Mombeshora will be the men’s team head coach going into this year’s edition.

“I believe that with the pool of talent that we have in this year’s squad, we have a shot at winning the title. The turnout has been tremendous and the players are very confident. We want to win and attract sponsorship to basketball in Bulawayo,” Mombeshora said.

Players that will form the core of the team include Liberty Nyathi of Kings, Derrick Chiradza who captains the Giants side, Jordan Davis of Southern Marvericks and Michael Zvoushe of Highlanders.

Tawanda Mudzudza, who was part of the 2007 squad, is expected to lead the side in the forwards alongside Steward Woods, Nyasha Zamani and Malcolm Woods.
