JOHANNESBURG — Chippa United are hoping that veteran striker Benjani Mwaruwari will improve his fitness levels ahead of the resumption of the League fixtures at the end of this month.

The Zimbabwean forward had been out of competitive action for a while before he was signed by the struggling Cape Town-based outfit.

The former Jomo Cosmos and Manchester City frontman played for just 20 minutes in the club’s 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in a League match on March 6 and the club’s technical department is now stepping up efforts to get him back to top form.

“Benjani is not fully fit,” Chippa United media officer Lukanyo Mzinzi told KickOff.com.

“The coach Wilfred Mugeyi and his team are working hard to improve this and he has been showing good signs on the field. “We played a friendly match against Milano FC, which we won 4-0 and we are hoping to play two more matches before we resume league fixtures.

“But it is not only about Benjani. We hope that these friendly matches will prepare us when we resume the fight to avoid relegation,” Mzinzi added.

Chippa United are at the bottom of the log with 16 points and are likely early candidates for relegation together with fellow neighbours Ajax Cape Town, Black Leopards and AmaZulu.

They have lost 11 League matches in their first season in the top-flight and are hoping that the likes of Mwaruwari will help them to avoid the grim prospect of going back to the lower rungs of football.
