The other qualifiers were held in Harare while the other was held in Rimuka and Ziscosteel yesterday with one athlete qualifying in Bulawayo on Saturday. Twenty athletes have so qualified for the final of one of the ZITF’S major attraction in Bulawayo next month.

Mabhunu beat the time of last year’s winner Jacob Mugomeri who romped home in four minutes 20, 97 seconds.

The Kadoma athlete, Mugomeri ensured that he has a chance to defend his title in this year’s competition after qualifying in four minutes 29,02 seconds.

Givemore Mudzinganyama (HAC) also made it to the final in four minutes 27, 12 seconds while Matabeleland North athlete Daniel Ncube romped home in four minutes 31, 81 seconds with Mashonaland Central’s Chirwozvo Mashoko qualifying in four minutes 31, 91 seconds.

Jonathan Chinyoka (ZPS Harare) also made it to the final in four minutes 25,76 seconds while Mashonaland Central athlete Lloyd Tauzen clocked four minutes 31,90 seconds.

Also making it into the final was Irvine Rwodzi in four minutes 28,06 seconds, Ziscosteel duo of Kelvin Gundani in four minutes 29,65 seconds and Trust Paradza in four minutes 30,27 seconds.

Advance Mucheneyi from Mlezu Agricultural College clocked four minutes 31, 16 seconds while Hubert Dube (ZRP Fairbridge) finished the race in four minutes 31,03 seconds.

Bulawayo Athletes Board secretary Dailes Bingadadi said they are looking forward to a tough contest this year. She said they are expecting more athletes in this year’s finals because they are planning to have other qualifiers in Bulawayo, Masvingo and Midlands State University.

This year’s first prize has been increased from last year’s $500 to $800 in addition to a trophy.
