Zinara stalls Bulawayo projects

THE Bulawayo City Council has temporarily suspended most projects funded by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara).

THE Bulawayo City Council has temporarily suspended most projects funded by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) following failure by the road authority last year to disburse funds to finance the projects.

A recent council report revealed that Zinara only disbursed $1,2 million out of the $3 million allocated for the city’s roads.

The local authority said the money was channelled towards routine and periodic maintenance, including pothole patching.

Another $1,7 million of the $2 million sourced from the Finance ministry was used for hiring and purchasing of material and fuel.

“Council sent a request for extra funds with the $450 000 acquittal,” reads part of the report.

“No disbursement was done and, therefore, most activities funded by Zinara were put on hold.”

The local authority claimed that 70% of its roads were in a bad state.

Last week, Zinara indicated that it would soon announce this year’s allocations of the road fund.
