Addressing journalists in Bulawayo last Friday, Dabengwa said the country adopted the dual Vice-Presidency at the signing of the Unity Accord in a bid to accommodate the two political parties then in a coalition government.

“Zapu is out of the Unity Accord and members who remain in Zanu PF are representing themselves. It’s no longer necessary,” Dabengwa said, adding together with other ex-PF Zapu members he had pulled out of Zanu PF to re-form Zapu in 2008 because they wanted leadership renewal.

He, however, denied claims that after quitting Zanu PF, he joined Simba Makoni’s Mavambo/ Kusile/Dawn (MKD) party.

“I never joined Makoni’s party and, after all, it only came to be a party after elections. I only supported Makoni as an alternative candidate within Zanu PF to challenge (President Robert) Mugabe because we wanted change,” he said.

Former PF Zapu members who have remained in Zanu PF include party national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo, who is now heavily tipped to take over as Vice-President following the death of VP John Nkomo last month.

Others are Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu, Angeline Masuku, Kembo Mohadi, Sikhanyiso Ndlovu and Eunice Sandi-Moyo.

The former Zipra intelligence supremo last week said some Zanu PF members had been trying to entice him to come back and be elected Vice-President, an offer he had turned down.

Dabengwa said the draft constitution, which is now set to be presented to Parliament and then go for a referendum, did not adequately capture public views on devolution of power, adding his party was yet to consult on how to vote during the constitutional referendum.
