REPORT BY OBEY MANAYITI

According to provincial assistant police spokesperson Luxson Chanada, Kundai Mupandu was left at a neighbour’s homestead in Manyadze village by her mother Grace Chapotoka (25) to play with other children last Friday as she conducted other chores.

“The deceased went to Mutorahuku River about 50 metres away without anyone noticing and drowned. After inquiries, her mother suspected that her son had gone to the river and she rushed to conduct a search, but failed to locate him,” Chananda said.

The following day Chapotoka went to inform the village head who then called other villagers to help search for the child.

“On that morning, the child’s body was found trapped between reeds along the river,” Chananda added.

The police confirmed that on February 10 at Armstrong Extension Farm in Rusape, another one-year-old toddler drowned under almost similar circumstances.

Chananda said on the fateful day, Zvikomborero Bakili’s parents Richard Bakili (45) and Susan Ruzvingwe (40) went to work at their farm and left their five children at home.

As the children were doing their household chores, Zvikomborero sneaked out and crawled to their family garden where she drowned in a stream.

“We advise parents or guardians to be watchful of their children and ensure that they do not go near water bodies where they may drown,” Chananda added.
