Polls: Khama doubts Mugabe

Botswana President Ian Khama has expressed doubts that Zanu PF will not stand in the way of free and fair elections.

Report By Staff Reporter

Khama, who has emerged as one of President Robert Mugabe’s most outspoken critics, told BusinessDay, a South African newspaper, that the people behind the deadly 2008 political violence in Zimbabwe were still active.

The remarks will be seen as targeted at Mugabe, whose Zanu PF party still controls security forces even after some reforms by the inclusive government.

“All I can say right now is that I hope there will be a credible election,” he told the paper on Thursday.

“The reason I say ‘hope’ is because all the people who were involved in the brutality and intimidation that took place back then are still there today.”

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai this week announced that elections were likely to be held in July. A referendum on the new constitution has been set for
March 16.

Khama said he was convinced Zanu PF was likely to use violence to win the elections.

“I think that they (Mugabe supporters) are still capable of trying to engage in intimidation, deploying the security services to bring that about . . . telling the people in the security services how they should vote,” he said. “The potential for that is still there.”

He urged the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) to send election monitors to Zimbabwe well before the polls.

Khama said this was necessary “so that you can monitor all the kinds of things that went wrong before the election last time and give comfort to the citizens, to be able to go about their political campaigning knowing observers are there”.

Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said Khama’s views must be ignored because parties in the inclusive government were happy with preparations for fresh elections.
“President Khama does not decide what happens in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“The political parties have agreed on the draft constitution, and that makes his sentiments absolutely irrelevant.”

Tsvangirai told civil society on Wednesday that Sadc would convene a special summit to ensure free and fair elections in Zimbabwe.Khama rejected Mugabe’s runoff election “victory” in 2008 and was at the forefront of calls to isolate the veteran ruler after the controversial polls.

Well said Khama and you have the brains that other leaders lack (MDC). How can one expect peaceful elections when murderers are still roaming the streets with hands dripping with blood? . Truthfully speaking, the only thing that will have changed at election time will be maybe the Constitution itself but that document alone is not enough to guarantee a free and fair.

    1. We must think like Zimbabwean,we must also know that we Zimbabweans we are our own liberators .Those who are afraid to go for election are fools and are the same people who called for sanctions , enough is enough you were given a test in the GNU you proved to be not patriotic .Zimbabwe is for ZImbabweans and not for sale.

      1. right load of crap!!!!

      2. its true Zimbabwe is for zimbos n we are going to decide our own fate thru voting for our own candidates not imposed ones. gone are the days of being threatened by violence gurus. only fools will beat pple for votes.Khama must concerntrate with his country n respect others. we are going to vote in peace coz everyone is in control of his/her vote.

    2. I would appreciate if Khama would spend sufficient time on his national issues. He must deal with his country’s problems; a nation with more donkeys that human beings. After all, Julius Malema was and is still right: Khama is an instrument of imperialist forces in the region. However, his noise has no value to us.

      1. So where is Julius Malema?

      2. and what a peacefull co-existence between the majority donkeys and human beings in Botswana BUT you the Tapfumaneyis can not stomach co- existing with other people of divergent political views. As we speak the EU member countries are debating about lifting sanctions on some Zimbabwean politicians – because they realise sanctions can not go on forever – this is called showing a human face – if you show no concern for your neighbour Tapfumaneyi do not take part in rebuilding our country.

      3. Phunyukabemphethe

Khama’s internal problems are also partly caused by Zimbabwes problems. He has hundreds if thousands of Zim refugees all causing social problems that threaten Botswanas political and economi stability. So he is within his rights to interfer in Zims political impasse.

  2. Yaah Khama, talking sense, coz rigging hev already started ana Tsvangirai vakangoti zii,They shld nt go 2 elections unless there is tangible ensurance of Free and Fair elections accompanied by electoral reforms and other reforms

    1. True Mr Khama.
Short to say there is nothing that Mugabe has done to lure new voters. Bhora mudondo akomana.
This tym sekuru vachazvambaradzwa that i consider him the winner if he gets 20% of the vote.
Down with Gbagbo. Ali. Saddam and Gaddafi.

  3. well said khama! u alwyz say e’ truth. those perpetrators are stil at large. 2 b honest the adverse conditions at the runoff r stil existin. pple with impartial, baised pple at e’ zec secretariat, no media & security reforms, posa and aipa, we r vry far!

  5. The question is what will sadc do if they know that prospects for violence are there n these boys in the mdc what’s their strategy to defend the masses and our vote. Are we not doomed again just wondering

    1. @maunza

The problem is that if mdc has a plan to defend the masses, the politicians will say its treason.

    2. SADc is a toothless bulldog VaMugabe vanotyiwa ku Sadc kuya …When he speaks they listen with their tail neatly placed btwn their legs

  6. Stupid donkey

    1. Mavikela, you are the stupid donkey, what’s your point?

  7. Never trust that old fox .

    1. Mugabe has already strarted rigging. But this time with the VOTERS ROLL.
He wants to make sure that at least a hundred thousand police and army personnel and wives are registered 1st before allowing registration to the public whom he so sure are 9 in 1 mdc.

  11. My main worry is that the MDC, especially its President, Morgan Richard Tsvangirayi, is so simplistic that they are taking Mugabe’s call for peaceful elections seriously. Mugabe is up to something. By restricting voter registration to his supporters, elements in the security establishment and their families, and by directing the Police Force to routinely harass those perceived as opposed to ZPF, Mugabe is already rigging the poll. All this while Tsvangirayi childishly thinks all will be delivered to him because SADC will monitor the situation. Mr Tsvangirai, please smell the coffee and develop robust risk management strategies beyond relying on the unreliable SADC. For every solution you might think you have, think of a worst case scenario and a mitigating strategy, including exiting the leadership of the MDC, assuming it will survive as an entity if it lost this break or make election.

    1. Phunyukabemphethe

When we say Tswangirayi is no leader, you disagree.

  12. Ofcourse no one is perfect, why is it that people are always attacking our president (R.G mugabe)…

    1. becoc he killed my relatives during 2008 elections

      1. If your relatives opposed land reform they were done for.Its their fault they are dead.

        1. @Big. I really wonder whether people reflect on the values attached to land. Would one, in his or he normal senses oppose its repossession and redistribution? Land is identity, dignity and a source of wealth. It defines us as a nation. Its normative value in our African context does need an element of force to appreciate it. Unless you were misled by certain groups of hollow individuals, I see no cogent reason for a peson of colour to oppose the ownership of land. This is my humble opinion my brother Big.

    2. Its simple my dear, the buck stops with him!remember he is the president with all the powers to make seemingly problematic situations good.Everyone is accountable to him & if deadwood is still making bad decisions tht affect everyone negatively & still manage to keep their jobs we blame the boss.Period!!

  13. Ofcourse no one is perfect, why is it that people are always attacking our president (R.G mugabe)…Send those monitors and I guarantee we will win this election and I will be waiting to hear more accusations concerning Mugabe

  14. Who doesn’t know that Khama is a puppet of the whites? For starters he was not democractically elected into power so he is least qualified to preach about democracy and free & fair elections. He is simply parroting a voice we have heard since time the beginning of time. Tsvangirai is in gvt and has a responsibility to ensure mechanisms for a free & fair election are put in place and not speak like an outsider to the system. If he fails then its all his fault. he got too busy with skirt chasing whilst ZPF got busy with work and now is has a deep feeling of being behind schedule.

  15. No matter which side of the political divide one may find oneself on, this is not what the general populace of peace loving Zimbabweans want coz it comes at a price. A price too huge to pay which is human blood. Let’s seek reasonable solutions to our problems. I will assume you are expressing a personal ambition rather than a party position. If it is a party position then Zimbabweans can judge for themselves what sort of lawless vampire they are dealing with. MDC had a chance but they are generally slow learners in the subject of politics. For instance instead of appeasing workers with better incentives they are showing that they are worse. For two years Biti keeps civil servants miserable yet they had hope of a new dimension. Now they are a frustrated lot saying better a devil you know than this MDC shit. Now check how many votes that all adds up too assuming each civil servant has a family which extends to their rural areas

  18. All I cn say is vote for Zanu or Zapu or MDC Ncube & Zimbabwe will hv a useless Unity government again.

Let’s give MDC T a clear majority so that when they fail its clear. not like this current situation where people say the MDC failed, but the president is, was & has always been Mugabe.

I’m telling u Zimbabweans madofo! wasted education! how can u retain da same people who have destroyed the country for over three decades?

    I’m angry.

    1. We said @ Methembe and also Khama is right it is very worrisome. Zimbos are good at crying instead of chosing options that bring lasting peace. I think this is down to selfshness and the need to live corruptly

  19. josefa chinotimba

Khama has said it again loud and clear. What Rugare Gumbo is saying ndezvekupenga izvo, zanu pf has already deployed Jabulani Sibanda to maim and kill people in mashonaland.

This party zanu pf can not be trusted at all.they are quite aware that this time MDC T will win by a majority vote and hence employing dirty tactics that saw a number of innocent people being displaced and killed in the last elections.President Khama is right just as good as I am for the SADC to quickly deploy monitors well ahead on time so that they assure people about their safety,a fox cannot be trusted at all, very cunning indeed.

The forth coming elections are a watershed indeed,MDC T will massacre this party zanu pf by 85% to 15 %.Mark my words.

  20. Once a crook always a crook! Who was responsible for the violence and why? Is it not Zimbabweans they were killing? Is it not Zimbabweans they voted for?

Is Tsvangirai not a Zimbabwean? Is MDC not a Zimbabwean legally registered party? So why kill maim Zimbabwean supporters of a Zimbabwean leader?

What has changed now? Do people need a new constitution to have a new mindset. Did the Lancaster House constitution allow wholesale killing & intimidation of voters? Or evil individuals did it for their selfish ends?

Have they changed? No! I think Khama is right. Nothing has changed. Only Zimbabweans see food on the shelves & have quickly forgotten………

  22. Early life
Robert Gabriel Mugabe was born near the
Kutama Jesuit Mission in the Zvimba District
northwest of Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia
to a Malawian father Gabriel Matibili and a
Shona mother Bona, both Roman Catholic. He
was the third of six children. He had two older
brothers, and one of them, Michael, was very
popular in the village. Both his older brothers
died when he was young, leaving Robert and
his younger brother, Donato. [12] His father, a
carpenter ,[13] abandoned the Mugabe family
in 1934 after Michael died, in search of work
    in Bulawayo. [14]
Mugabe was raised as a Roman Catholic,
studying in Marist Brothers and Jesuit
    schools, including the exclusive Kutama
College , headed by an Irish priest, Father
Jerome O’Hea, who took him under his wing.
Through his youth, Mugabe was never socially
popular nor physically active and spent most
of his time with the priests or his mother
when he was not reading in the school’s
libraries. He was described as never playing
with other children but enjoying his own
company. [13] According to his brother Donato
his only friends were his books. [15]
He qualified as a teacher, but left to st

    1. ZANU PF is untouchable.ask Tsvangirai himself.

  27. What a clown. Have you even read the electoral act? Biti cannot and will not declare anything because 1) he has no authority to do so 2) he will go straight to jail. Sadc has no authority to call the elections! Only ZEC has that authority. So you can dream on my friend and tell the gullible your Silly plans. Hope they will believe u.

    1. You missed the point or it went above your head. Just rushed to insult. I said make it ungovernable. What electoral law are you takling about? The same one that George Chiweshe doesn’t bide by? That law says run off in 3 weeks but Chiweshe came out saying he may delay the election. Just like that and no one asked him to stand trial for defying this law. Now you want to come out and tell us the law. Anyway, like I said we will make it ungovernable. My point been for Biti to be called treasonous he has to be brought to court and we will have our day in court to expose how THEY themselves have defied writtend and codified laws. Do you remember Moshood Abiola in Nigeria? Read more on what ungovernable means. Biti cannot go straight to jail, no matter how obvious his lawlessness may be. he goes to court and if they won’t abide by the law in elections then they will be exposed in court. I know alot of you think we should remain docile sheep willing to be sacrificed but I have lost too many relatives and cadres. This time we meet them with obstinence and resilience.Cowards stay at home. There has never been a revolution without sacrifice. Never!
