The taxi driver, Fananidzo Masukuma, was robbed of a vehicle valued at $6 000.

Cloud Muzerura (26) of Nenyere Flats in Mbare, Harare, and Pisirayi Chinoyingira (35) of Machekera village in Gokwe were arraigned before magistrate Takawira Mugabe who remanded them in custody to February 12.

The prosecution argued against bail saying the accused were a flight risk.

The court heard that on January 11 at around 1520 hours, Masukuma (41) was approached by the two who wanted to hire him to travel to Karoi for $80. The driver accepted the offer and the trio embarked on the journey.

When they arrived at Mhondoro Game Park turn-off along the Harare-Chirundu Highway, the complainant was ordered to divert into the dust road that leads to the animal sanctuary where a friend.

After driving for about 2km, the assailants ordered the driver to stop the car, pushed Masukuma out before one of them jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off towards the main road, leaving him stranded in the bush.

In the car was the driver’s mobile telephone and wallet containing $80, the court heard.

The robbers’ luck ran out on January 26 after police got a tip-off from an informant that the stolen taxi had been spotted at White House Gold Mine in Chikuti.

Acting on the information, detectives pounced on Muzerura whom they found fixing the car which had developed a mechanical fault.

When Muzerura saw the cops, he fled into the bush and the law enforcement agents fired warning shots, but he defied orders to surrender.

Detectives later quizzed Muzerura’s girlfriend who lived in a nearby compound.

She led them to Alaska where Muzerura was arrested and implicated Chinoyingira, who was nabbed the same day at Nyamuswe Farm in Tengwe, Karoi, where he was in hiding.

The robbers were also found in possession of an Omega amplifier and speakers stolen in Gokwe using complainant’s vehicle. Hazel Kondo prosecuted.
