THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) will be a hive of activity today as Bulawayo Metropolitan Province secondary schools converge for the inter-district schools’ athletics competition.

Mzilikazi, Reigate, Khami, Imbizo and Bulawayo Central are the five districts that will fight it out in the cross-country and track and field events in the gala that is expected to end tomorrow.

The athletes will take part in the 4km race (Under-16 girls), 6km race (Under-16 boys and Under-18 and Under-20 girls), while the Under-18 boys and Under-20 boys will participate in the 8km race.

In other events lined up for today, athletes will do battle in the 100m, 200m and 400m heats, while others will compete in the 2 000m walk.

The finals of the 100m race will be hosted today.

Tomorrow action will continue with the finals of the 200m and 400m races, while long-distance athletes will take part in the 800m, 1 500m, 3 000m and 5 000m races.

Some of the field events, which include javelin, shot-put, discus, hammer, long-jump, triple- jump and high–jump, are expected to start today and finish tomorrow.

Athletes are expected to return to the track for the 4x100m and 4x400m races as well as the medley relays tomorrow.

After the two-day competition, top athletes will be drafted into the provincial team that will represent the province in the inter-provincial championships in Harare next month.

Organiser of this year’s event and provincial coach Simba Dangah said they were hoping athletes would get good times.
