Mugeyi’s job safe – for now

Under Mugeyi’s watch, Chippa have conceded nine goals in four matches while scoring six and this has heightened speculation that the trigger happy Mpengesi will soon show the former Ajax Cape Town assistant coach the door.

Since dismissing Manqoba Mngqithi after just two League matches, Mpengesi has demonstrated a propensity of hiring and firing coaches without warning.

However, Chippa United media officer Lukanyo Mzinzi tells KickOff.com that Mugeyi will be kept on the hot seat.

“The mandate of the coach is not going to be under discussion during the club’s meeting,” Mzinzi says.

“His performance will only be reviewed in about a month’s time so I can assure you that nothing dramatic is about to happen.

“The coach and his technical team have the support of the club and the entire management,” he adds.

Mzinzi says Mugeyi will not be judged on the team’s elimination from the Nedbank Cup.

“When he was appointed as coach, he was given the mandate to improve the team’s position on the log standings so how can he be assessed on the performance of the team in the Nedbank Cup?”

Mugeyi is eager to prove his worth in his first job as head coach of a PSL club.

The 43-year-old Zimbabwean was a top striker for Umtata-based Bush Bucks during his playing days, winning PSL’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer awards for the 1996/97 season.
