THE late Paul “Doctor Love” Matavire’s music royalties, which went uncollected at the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) for the past seven years, have finally been claimed.

Since the death of the talented singer in October 2005, his royalties successively accumulated at Zimura because the association could not locate an heir to his estate.
Zimura director, Polisile Ncube said an attendee to the association’s recent workshop in Bulawayo linked them to the Matavires. She confirmed three family members shared royalties amounting to about $3 000.
Matavire’s children — Kudzanai, Wadzanai and Dzidzanani with the assistance of their uncle Luncson and aunt Lizzy — presented Zimura with an affidavit stating how the children would share the royalties.
Kudzanai and Wadzanai were entitled to 25% each while, Dzidzanai the youngest of them all, got 50%.
“Dzidzanai has already collected her share of their father’s royalties, but the other two are still to come,” Ncube said.
She said it was, however, unfortunate that some of the royalties amounting to several quintillions of Zimbabwean dollars had gone down the drain because of inflation.

“It is unfortunate that some deceased musician’s families relocate to rural areas without knowing that they have to collect royalties and finding them (the families) becomes hard for us.
However, we still keep the money until it is claimed,” she said.
Luncson confirmed the collection of royalties and expressed hope that one of the late musician’s family members would revive Doctor Love’s music.
