A 20-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo maid who allegedly suffocated her employer’s 10-month-old baby by wrapping it in a blanket and shoving it into a drawer early this month, appeared in court yesterday facing a murder charge.

Violet Moyo of New Luveve suburb was not asked to plead when she appeared before magistrate Themba Chimiso. She was remanded in custody to February 25.

The State alleged that on February 1, Moyo was left attending to the baby in Cowdray Park when her employers went to work in the city.

However, the baby started crying continuously and this allegedly irritated her.

In a fit of rage, Moyo wrapped the baby in a blanket and shoved it into a headboard drawer in her bedroom and went to the next room where she watched television for the next three hours.

She later went to check on the baby and discovered that it was dead. To cover up for the offence, she allegedly retrieved the body from the drawer and placed it between the headboard and bed.

She then raised an alarm with neighbours claiming she had found the baby dead. Police investigations led to her arrest.
