‘Investigate Gwanda teacher victimisation’

THE Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe has education officials in Matabeleland South to urgently investigate the alleged victimisation of a Gwanda teacher by Gwanda South MP Orders Mlilo (Zanu PF).

THE Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) yesterday said it had asked education officials in Matabeleland South to urgently investigate the alleged victimisation of a Gwanda teacher by Gwanda South MP Orders Mlilo (Zanu PF).

Report by Silas Nkala

PTUZ national organising secretary Enoch Paradzayi said his union had asked the acting provincial education director Reuben Mabhena to investigate the matter and assist in transferring the affected teacher, Urgent Moyo, to a safer station.

“I personally asked Mabhena to assist Moyo to transfer from the school, but Mabhena said that could only be done if Moyo made a written request to the ministry,” Paradzayi said.

Mlilo is alleged to have stormed Mlambapele Primary School in Gwanda last week and threatened to abduct Moyo accusing him of “poisoning” other teachers’ minds through his affiliation to the PTUZ. Although Mabhena was not available for comment, acting deputy provincial education officer Rhodes Ndlovu said they had not yet received a transfer request from Moyo.

“We still have not received a formal written report from the teacher and it is difficult for us to act without documents,” Ndlovu said. Paradzayi said he had since advised Moyo to urgently make a written request to the ministry.

“I advised Moyo that he must not take Mlilo’s remarks lightly as these people are capable of doing anything,” he said. Moyo last week told NewsDay that Mlilo threatened to abduct him if he continued staying at the school.

“I reported the matter at Mlambapele Police Base on Monday, but I still fear that my life is in danger.”

Mlilo, however, denied the allegations and later switched off his mobile phone.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya was not available for comment yesterday.
