Acting national traffic police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the deal yesterday.

“The ICZ is calling upon all those who were victims of the accidents to go to the police station where their cases will be investigated so that they can be compensated.

The ICZ wants to process compensation for these victims,” Chakanza said.

“The ICZ said they noted reports from the local media that there were more than 1 000 accidents over the just-ended festive season and over 200 fatalities recorded, many of these involving public service vehicles, that is the reason why they are taking action.”

Some 230 people died and 1 155 were injured in road traffic accidents that occurred between December 15 last year and January 9 this year, compared to 147 accident-related deaths that occurred over the same period the previous year.

The ICZ is made up of several insurance companies.
